Life Path Numbers
Your life path number — calculated from your date of birth — describes your core personality, calling and the lessons your life keeps teaching. Choose a number to read its full meaning.
What a life path number is
Your life path number is the number that comes from your date of birth, and in numerology it is treated as the core of the whole chart. Where the numbers taken from your name describe what you express and what you privately want, the life path describes the road itself: the temperament you arrived with, the kind of work that fits you, the lessons that keep circling back until you learn them. It is a single digit from 1 to 9, or one of the master numbers 11, 22 and 33 — and unlike almost everything else about you, it never changes. The date is fixed, so the number is too. Every page in this section reads one number in full: personality, career, love, compatibility with the other numbers, and the traps that come attached to the gift.
How to calculate your life path number
Work with the full birth date — month, day and four-digit year — reducing each part on its own before adding anything together.
Take March 14, 1992. The month is 3, already a single digit. The day is 14, so 1 + 4 = 5. The year is 1992: 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21, and 2 + 1 = 3. Now add the three results: 3 + 5 + 3 = 11. Because 11 is a master number you stop there — it is not reduced to 2, so this date gives life path 11.
Adding every digit straight through happens to land in the same place for this date: 1 + 4 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 29, and 2 + 9 = 11. For plenty of other dates the two routes disagree, which is why the parts matter. The month-day-year route is the one to trust: it protects a master number hiding inside one part of the date, which a single long sum can flatten. That protection is the rule, not an exception — if the month, day or year itself lands on 11 or 22, leave it unreduced and add it as it stands. It is the only way a life path 33 can appear at all: three single digits top out at 27. If your total is a two-digit number other than 11, 22 or 33, reduce it once more: 16 becomes 1 + 6 = 7. Or let the calculator on this site do it for you.
Master numbers 11, 22 and 33
Numerology treats 11, 22 and 33 as master numbers and leaves them unreduced. The reasoning is that a doubled digit carries its own charge: 11 is the 1 twice over, 22 the 2, 33 the 3. Reduce them and you get 2, 4 and 6 — which is why master numbers are read as those numbers plus a higher, more demanding version.
11 is the intuitive one: the 2's sensitivity turned up until it becomes insight, with the nerves that come with it. 22 is the master builder — the 4's practicality applied to something much larger than a personal career. 33 is the master teacher, the 6's care extended past family to whoever needs it.
A master number is not a grade. It is read as a heavier assignment, often arriving late and unevenly, and many people live the reduced number for years before the larger version switches on.
Life path vs. your other numbers
The life path is one of several numbers in a full reading; the difference between them is where each comes from. Yours comes from your birth date. The expression number, sometimes called destiny, comes from your full name at birth and describes your natural abilities and how you come across. The soul urge, from the vowels in that name, is what you actually want when nobody's asking. The personality number, from the consonants, is the version of you strangers meet first. The calculator here works out all four from a name and a birth date.
Angel numbers are a different thing entirely. Sequences like 111 or 444 that keep turning up on clocks and receipts are read as messages arriving at a moment, not a permanent profile — they shift with what is happening in your life, while your life path never does. They have their own section here.
